After heart disease and cancer, medical error is estimated to be the third leading cause of death in the United States. This startling projection emphasizes the need for all anesthesia professionals to increase the attention given to protecting patient safety during the perioperative period.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) play an important role in patient safety. However, staying current with new patient safety risks and initiatives can be challenging. Therefore, this lecture will improve attendees’ ability to serve as patient safety advocates by highlighting APSF's 12 patient safety priorities with special focus on 1) medication safety, 2) transitions of care, and 3) distractions in the operating room.
