This presentation provides an overview of a DNP quality improvement project conducted at a private Midwest hospital. The primary project intervention was the development and implementation of a standardized protocol for intraoperative lidocaine infusions as a multimodal analgesia intervention for abdominal, spine and rib fracture surgical patients. The project aimed to increase the utilization of lidocaine infusions in a standardized fashion, as well as track its effects on intraoperative and postoperative opioid usage, postoperative pain scores, incidence of nausea and vomiting and PACU length of stay. The project was designed as a pre-post study and data analysis included a retrospective sample for baseline data.
This presentation will review the literature supporting lidocaine infusion use and its benefits, highlight the quality improvement process and development of an evidence-based standardized protocol, and share the results of this quality improvement project.
