Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) patients are often referred to as “Butterfly Children” because their skin is as fragile as the wings of a butterfly. A dermatologic disorder may not seem like a disease process that warrants highlight in the anesthesia world. However, this presentation uses a real-life case study to navigate providers through the importance of underlying knowledge about this disease process. Considerations for the care of these patients begin at the very basics of standard monitoring and lead up to anesthetic considerations regarding the pathophysiology of this disease, that lies much deeper than the surface of the skin. Attendees will leave empowered to care for an Epidermolysis Bullosa Patient.
