Thirteen years ago, post-Hurricane Katrina flooding inundated the Louisiana National Guard Museum and Library at Jackson Barracks with polluted water. Recovery efforts included collections rescue and cleaning, construction of a new building, and regenerating the collections management and exhibition programs. Take a tour of the Katrina response exhibition with the curator who experienced the flood. Through behind-the-scenes access and hands-on demonstrations of textile cleaning, collections processing, and storage, learn about optimal building design and post-disaster collections recovery and management.

Bus will depart from Convention Center at 9:15 AM.

Accessibility
Small group activities and presentations will allow optimal vision and hearing access. The museum and all interior spaces are wheelchair accessible and an elevator is provided for second floor access. Service animals are allowed.

Guests are encouraged to bring cameras.

Learning Objectives:

• Describe the importance of resiliency as an individual and an institution when faced with a disastrous situation, and techniques for building such resiliency.
• Describe optimal and less than optimal features of museum facility design as it pertains to disaster preparedness and collections management.
• Develop and implement collections management best practices through the post-disaster experience.
