Future of Museums
“A little nonsense, now and then,” wrote Roald Dahl, “Is cherished by the wisest men.” But is it there room for it in museums? That is the question behind Occuplay Museums: a 2018 experiment in which a dozen US and UK museums acted on prompts designed to allow playful behavior in their galleries. Occuplay co-organizer Megan Dickerson will share successes achieved and roadblocks faced by participating museums, and will, throughout, lead short exercises designed to explore our own museums’ capacities for playfulness. The session will ignite a provocative discussion: should museums, in the future, become more playful and, if so, how? And further: is it possible that a more playful museum just might be a more inclusive museum?
