Future of Museums
With a leadership change following 25 year of stasis, the San Diego Natural Museum needed some revitalization, and a little shaking up. We did this through the “Evolutionary Venture Fund (EVF).” It sparked staff creativity, created an atmosphere of risk tolerance and experimentation, and helped us build audiences, create new sources of revenue, and strengthen our mission.
We learned a tremendous amount from the first two funding cycles, and their success generated a continuation of the program. The EVF launched a cultural change in the Museum. It spurred creative thinking and enthusiasm across the organization, and we learned how even the smallest idea could help achieve our goals. Of course, we also learned what to avoid trying again!
