Education & Interpretation
Although many state education standards encourage the examination of artifacts as primary sources, it can be difficult to apply historical thinking skills to objects given the logistics of the average field trip. The models most commonly proposed in curricula generally require more time and research than is realistic during school visits. This session will showcase a solution developed in response to these challenges – a tour model that can be applied to any object collection with a guiding question. The presenter will also share materials illustrating how the tour reinforces historical thinking skills as defined by the AP United States History course outline and can discuss why the Bayou Bend volunteer docents embrace the new tour model.
