Director of Interpretive Engagement

Swarupa Anila is director of interpretive engagement at the Detroit Institute of Arts and is responsible for strategic museum-wide planning and execution of visitor-centered interpretation for exhibitions and permanent collections. Swarupa leads a team of interpretation experts in the development of overall interpretive plans, labels, hands-on and multimedia components. With nearly two decades of museum experience, Swarupa has led the development of award-winning interpretation and exhibitions and has produced numerous publications on innovative and critically progressive practices for visitor-centeredness and community engagement. A widely-recognized leader in her field, Swarupa regularly participates in and shapes national dialogues about best practices in issues of representation and inclusion in the museum field. Swarupa serves on the editorial advisory board for Exhibition, journal for the National Association for Museum Exhibition (NAME) and is a founding board member of the Association for Art Museum Interpretation (AAMI).
