Carolyn Royston joined Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in 2018 as Chief Experience Officer (CXO), a newly created role that aims to seamlessly weave the digital and the physical experience together to create an integrated visitor experience. Previously Director of Digital at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Carolyn led the the launch of a new award-winning website and new initiatives to improve the visitor experience. In 2017, she participated as a Fellow in the Getty Leadership Institute (GLI) and was President of MCN (Museum Computer Network), a not for profit organization representing a wide range of information professionals from cultural sector institutions in the US and around the world. Carolyn was Head of Digital at Imperial War Museums (UK) from 2009-2014, where she was responsible for all public-facing digital outputs across five museum sites. Prior to that, she was Project Director of the National Museums Online Learning Project, a flagship UK project led by the V&A, where she coordinated and managed the needs of 9 UK national museums to create an ambitious program of e-Learning resources and cross-collection search linking the 9 museums together for the first time.
A graduate of Mount Holyoke College with a BA in Politics, she also holds an MA in Social and Political Thought from the University of Sussex (UK) and a Post-Graduate Degree in Education from the Institute of Education, University of London.
