Beatriz Haspo is the Collections Officer of the Library of Congress since 2006, managing a broad range of activities to ensure preservation, access, security, and storage of over 24 million volumes of the Library’s book collection. She is a senior conservator with expertise in logistics, space management, digitization, and emergency preparedness and response. She manages library-wide initiatives and programs dealing with collections management, collections development, logistics, design and construction of off-site storage facilities, and digitization. In addition, she is a Contracting Officer Representative managing several contracts and interagency agreements for services and commodities for preservation, security, access, and transport of library collections of all formats. She supervises a large and diverse staff, interns, contractors, and volunteers. In the year 2000, she began working at the Library at the Conservation Division. She is a graduate of the Library of Congress’ Leadership Development Program (2016-2017) and has received numerous outstanding awards from that institution.
Ms. Haspo is adjunct faculty at the University of Maryland iSchool. Ms. Haspo lectures and advises on projects nationally and internationally and is a member of major national and international organizations in the preservation field. She is a Board member of the Editorial Board of the American Institute for Conservation and Program Chair of the Latin American and Caribbean Scholarly Program of the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation. Since 2004 she serves as volunteer manager of APOYOnline - Association for Heritage Preservation of the Americas that promotes communication and professional development in the Americas and in Portuguese and Spanish speaking countries.
Born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, she holds certificates in book, paper and painting conservation; M.A. in Art History; B.A. in Simultaneous Translation (German-Spanish-Portuguese); additional education includes Civil Engineering and Classical Music. She is fluent in English, German, Spanish, Italian, and Portuguese, French and Japanese (beginner).
