Lasers are an effective tool for the treatment of peri-implantitis, either as a standalone procedure or part of a clinical protocol. There are several laser wavelengths that are safe and effective for use around dental implants. This presentation will show examples of different laser approaches (open and closed flap) and the clinical indications for their use. In addition, we will examine scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the implant surfaces after laser irradiation using different wavelengths. These images are magnified up to 50,000x and show interesting results with each laser wavelength. A brief discussion of ongoing clinical trials using lasers for the treatment of peri-implantitis will also be discussed.
