Volunteered - Oral Presentation Session
Previous literature demonstrates that Dominican deportees encounter a host of healthcare vulnerabilities based upon their labor experiences in the Dominican tourism industry. But, there is little known about how Dominican deportees encounter different labor and health experiences in Dominican call centers. This paper seeks to describe and compare the labor and health experiences for Dominican deportees in the two Dominican industries where Dominican deportees are most likely to work – call centers and tourism industries. In so doing, we will first define the ‘labor and health experiences’ facing deportee laborers in each of these two sectors. Then, we will compare the health vulnerabilities that arise for deportee laborers in each of these sectors. In the conclusion, we will explore and discuss how these health vulnerabilities are possibly caused by the labor practices and experiences in the two different sectors and/or how these health vulnerabilities may be the results of stigma and discrimination that Dominican deportees face because of previous migratory experiences
