Volunteered - Oral Presentation Session
My presentation ‘There and back: Luso-Canadian transnationals experiences between the Greater Toronto Area and Central Portugal' will discuss ethnographic fieldwork findings from August 2016- December 2018. Specifically, I have interviewed twenty Luso-Canadian transnationals who have lived in both the GTA and central Portugal over their lifetime and who maintain and retain social, economic, and cultural networks and ties in both places. This presentation will answer: How do Luso-Canadians connect to what is being re-presented as ‘Portuguese’ once they return to the GTA? How does their bilingualism (English and Portuguese) impact their identity and sense of belonging in either Portugal or the GTA? Does being bilingual impact their prospects of integration, employment, and education? What is being reproduced within this diasporic community as ‘Portuguese’? As this is part of a larger study on the Portuguese community, this presentation will discuss preliminary interview themes and findings from this portion of research.
