Applying Lithuanian Farmers’ Cultural Models of Nature to Strategize Adaptations to Climate and EU Policy Changes.

In previous research on Lithuanian farmers’ cultural models (CMs) of nature, it was recognized that the CMs are not set in stone but modified depending on how farmers’ perceive themselves in relationship to different variables within different social contexts.  Tentatively identified are their own sense of autonomy and competence, their embeddedness and status in local farming networks, policy changes in farming practices, and their own adaptations to climate change (for instance growing new strains of crops, shifting from cattle to grain, etc.), and the place of fate in their over all world view. In this presentation, I discuss a prototypical cultural model of Lithuanian farmers and suggest how it is modified depending on the above variables.
