Teaching in Justice is not limited to the anthropological classroom. As anthropologists teaching in other disciplines, we are well-positioned to impart our message of social justice through purposeful course content and course design practices. In the College of Health Sciences at Walden University, it is my job to review all new or revised curriculum in public health, health education and promotion, healthcare management, and nursing, to ensure that a climate of fairness and inclusivity is infused into our pedagogy. This inclusive pedagogy is achieved through careful review of language choice, case studies, and resources aimed at identifying and removing unintended stereotypes, fostering diversity, and pushing forward our institution’s mission of positive social change. Through an anthropological eye that is holistic, relativist, and cross-cultural in focus, this work is helping to undermine injustice, raise awareness regarding privilege, and effectively reach health professional students without a background in anthropology.
