Implantable Hearing Devices (IHD)
Instructional Level: Intermediate
Cochlear implant (CI) electrode array design has evolved to improve the likelihood of post-operative hearing preservation (HP); however, there is no consensus regarding which array style (lateral wall vs. perimodiolar) is optimal. Further, there is limited evidence regarding potential superiority of either design strategy on speech recognition outcomes. This study is a retrospective chart review of speech recognition outcomes in 126 ears with pre-operative audiometric thresholds <80 dB implanted with either slim straight or slim mid-modiolar electrode arrays.
