Hearing Loss Prevention (HLP)
Instructional Level: Intermediate
Noise exposure is an occupational hazard for police officers; the noise they are exposed to often exceeds permissible levels by governing agencies. The purpose of this study was to assess hearing and noise exposure levels in K9 and Non-K9 police officer handlers. Preliminary findings indicate evidence of noise-induced hearing loss in approximately 70% of the officers. Outcomes emphasize the necessity for increased awareness, conservation programs and routine monitoring to prevent long-term hearing related disability in this population.
