State anxiety was measured as a function of speech recognition testing in young, middle-aged, and older adults. State anxiety was measured via the State Trait Anxiety Inventory pre- and post- four speech recognition measures. Middle-aged adults demonstrated significant increases in state anxiety after speech recognition testing that was unrelated to test performance. Difficulty understanding speech is associated with perceived threats to social identity and increased social anxiety. Therefore, anxiety in middle-aged adults may interfere with post-test counseling and recommendations.
