Combat-related injuries in veterans can cause mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) as well as auditory/vestibular problems. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is often comorbid. Both mTBI and PTSD can affect attention, memory, executive function, and cognition, which can confound audiologic assessments, result in test inconsistencies, and raise suspicion for nonorganic hearing loss. Audiologists must be aware of these non-auditory issues/behaviors that may explain inconsistent test results. Professionals must also must be sensitive to these issues when counseling this veteran population.
