Although there are several treatment options for tinnitus, we still lack clinically proven approaches to eliminate tinnitus. In this investigation, we have implemented positive reinforcement training in conjunction with the phenomenon of lateral inhibition to decrease the excitability of neurons tuned to the tinnitus frequency and increase excitability in neurons corresponding to 1/8th octave regions on either side of the tinnitus frequency. Preliminary post-training results indicate a decrease in tinnitus loudness, better scores on tinnitus questionnaires and enhanced evoked potentials.
