Persons with Chiari Malformation Type I (CM-I) frequently have symptoms of dizziness and imbalance. We evaluated auditory and vestibular function in 21 CM-I patients with vestibular symptoms. Hearing loss occurred in only 10%. Rotary chair and VEMP testing provided evidence of peripheral vestibular dysfunction in 10%. However, platform posturography was abnormal and suggestive of poor use of vestibular cues in 35%. While peripheral vestibular dysfunction is uncommon, audio-vestibular evaluation of CM-I patients with dizziness and/or imbalance may facilitate patient management.
