The New Clinical Science of ECT

The general mental health professional may not be aware of recent advances in the clinical science of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Knowledge of such advances is important for the practitioner to make informed decisions regarding referral for this procedure. This session will update participants on the new clinical science of ECT, including recent modifications in ECT technique, and provide guidelines for referral of patients for ECT.

C. Edward Coffey, MD, is an accomplished physician (board certified in both Neurology and Psychiatry) with expertise in neuropsychiatry and brain stimulation therapies. Dr. Coffey has held faculty and leadership positions at Duke University Medical Center (1984-1990), Allegheny University of the Health Sciences (1990-1996), Henry Ford Health System and Wayne State University School of Medicine (1996-2014), and The Menninger Clinic (President and CEO, 2014-2017). He is also an award-winning health care executive, recognized for leading high quality, financially successful, academically-based systems of integrated health care. Dr. Coffey’s innovative work on “Perfect Depression Care” has been widely cited as a model for health care transformation, and its audacious goal of “zero suicides” has become an international movement, honored by The Joint Commission (2006 Codman Award), the American Psychiatric Association (2006 Gold Achievement Award), the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (2011), and by his appointment to the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (2011). 

Dr. Coffey has made important contributions to the fields of neuropsychiatry, brain stimulation, brain imaging, brain aging, and suicide prevention. He is the author of over 130 scientific publications and book chapters, he edits several influential textbooks, and he serves on the Editorial Board of several medical journals. Dr. Coffey is the recipient of numerous academic honors and awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in Neuropsychiatry, the highest honor awarded by the American Neuropsychiatric Association.
