My Personal and Professional Journey Through Autism: Update on Autism Treatment Through the Lifespan

Many medications are being prescribed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders while they have not been proven effective. This session will discuss methodologies to reduce problem behavior in individuals with autism such as applied behavior analysis; functional behavior assessments; visual supports to reduce anxiety and agitation; and plans utilizing procedures such as differential reinforcement and functional communication training. This session will focus on developing effective plans that can improve problem behaviors and decrease psychotropic medication use in patients with autism.

Ilana Slaff, MD

Ilana Slaff, MD, is a psychiatrist who has identical twin brothers and a daughter with autism. She also completed an autism research fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York and works primarily with individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. Dr. Slaff is the author of “Don’t Medicate—Educate! One Family, Three Cases of Autism, Safe Treatment for Dangerous Behavior.” Dr. Slaff also assisted editing the chapter “Complementary and Alternative Therapies for Autism” in the Clinical Treatment Manual for Autism (2007) and has been published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, the Psych Congress Network and the Current Psychiatry Journal. Dr. Slaff has given continuing medical education lectures internationally on autism diagnosis and management and has also lectured to families. She has experience in consulting and supervising functional behavior assessments and behavior intervention plans at a day habilitation center. Dr. Slaff has presented at numerous public hearings, including before the FDA. She also received the 2000 New York Medical College Award for Academic Excellence for her research on pharmacological and skin shock treatment of self-injurious behavior in individuals with autism and intellectual disabilities. She has also spoken on New York’s Capitol Pressroom radio show and appeared on Your News Now Capital Tonight for New York, discussing proposed legislation affecting individuals with special needs.

Carol Fiorile, PhD, BCBA-D, is a graduate of Teachers College Columbia University, with a PhD in Health and Behavior Studies, under the tutelage of Dr. R. Douglas Gree. She has worked in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis for 23 years, primarily serving young children diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. In addition to her work with children with ASD either independently or through public school districts in the NY tri-state area, Dr. Fiorile provides services as an Independent Expert, frequently testifying at trials and hearings, on behalf of individuals with ASD and related communication disorders, as well as children who present with challenging behaviors that negatively impact their abilities to access appropriate educational programs as well as enhanced community experiences. She has taught graduate-level coursework in Special Education at City University of New York, Queens College, for 12 years.
