Mr. Steven Vargas, Program Coordinator with AAMA (Association for the Advancement of Mexican Americans) began helping people living with HIV in 1989, has been living with HIV since 1995, and was recognized as one of Poz Magazine’s “100 Long Term Survivors” in its annual “Top 100” December 2015 issue. The recognition highlights his active participation with Houston’s Latino HIV Task Force for the past decade. He has been a Houston Ryan White Planning Council member since 2006, and served as Chair of the Houston RWPC from 2014 - 2016. A past graduate of the Latino Commission on AIDS “Dennis DeLeon Sustainable Leadership Institute”, Steven strives to share what he has learned, and has presented at the 2014 Creating Change Conference, the Ryan White Grantee Conference held in Washington DC in both 2012 and 2016, and the first National Latino HIV and Hepatitis C Conference. Steven is a board member of Houston’s OH Project which preserves the experiences of Houstonians impacted by HIV, and is serving a four year term as a Community Member representative to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents. Along with these duties, he also serves as a Trainer for NMAC’s Building Leaders of Color program and as a consultant with Project CHATT (Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Training and Technical Assistance) which provides technical assistance to Ryan White planning bodies in reaching their legislative requirements.
