Liesl Nydegger, PhD, MPH, is an Assistant Professor in Health Behavior and Health Education and Director of the Gender Health Equity Lab in the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education at The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Nydegger earned her Ph.D. in Health Promotion Sciences with a concentration in Global Health, and her Master's in Public Health in Health Promotion, Education, and Evaluation from Claremont Graduate University, School of Community and Global Health. In 2015, Dr. Nydegger was awarded a 2-year Ruth L. Kirschstein Institutional National Research Service Award Postdoctoral Research Fellowship at the Center for AIDS Intervention Research at the Medication College of Wisconsin. Dr. Nydegger was awarded a Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship in 2012-2013 that took place in Durban, South Africa. Dr. Nydegger's research interests focus on sexual health equity among vulnerable and underserved populations such as illicit drug users and racial/ethnic minorities who experience health disparities. Specifically, she is interested in HIV and sexually transmitted infection prevention, substance abuse, and violence (e.g., structural violence, community violence, intimate partner violence, childhood sexual abuse) known as the SAVA syndemic. Dr. Nydegger’s current research combines behavioral change theories with an understanding of structural causes (i.e., housing instability, poverty) of HIV in order to encourage use of new biomedical interventions such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to help prevent HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among high-risk women.
