Ellen Weiss Wiewel, DrPH, MHS, is the Director of Research and Evaluation for the Housing Services Unit at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Her team develops research questions relevant to HIV housing policy; oversees data matches; evaluates HOPWA, Ryan White, and other housing programs; and conducts analyses and data dissemination to improve the health of tens of thousands of low-income New Yorkers with HIV. Her areas of specialty include the HIV care continuum; links between poverty, unstable housing, and health; racial and ethnic minority, foreign-born, and transgender populations; and the community planning process for HIV funding allocation. She holds a Doctor of Public Health degree in epidemiology from CUNY’s Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, a Master of Health Science degree in Infectious Disease Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Sociology from Smith College.
