MP19-12 - Validation of a novel laparoscopic partial nephrectomy surgical training model

Introduction & Objective :

Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy contains multiple techniques and surgeons have to learn them. Replica kidney model is one of the training tool for the operation. We evaluated the face, content and constructive validities of the kidney tumor model as a laparoscopic partial nephrectomy training tool.


Methods :

Using established validation methodology, face, content, and construction validities were evaluated. Face and content validities were assessed using a subjective evaluation based on a 5-point Likert scale. Constructive validity was assessed by analyzing the surgical performance of experts and novice groups for time, tumor margin, and quality of suture. Participants performance scoring were judged by an expert reviewer based on a Global Operative Assessment of Laparoscopic Skills (GOALS), a validated laparoscopic assessment tool. Participants were classified as novice (less than 20 laparoscopic cases, 8) and expert (20 or more laparoscopic cases and certificated by Japanese Society of Endourology, 8). They carried out resection of the model using the same surgical instruments and techniques.


Results : Experts rated the training model as ‘very realistic’ (median visual analogue score 4/5) and ‘as difficult as the real operation’ (4/5) (face validation). Experts also rated the model as ‘very useful training tool and recommend others’ (4/5), and ‘use by themselves to keep their own technique’ (4/5) (content validation). Experts outperformed novices (construct validation) in total GOALS score (P<0.001), suture time (P=0.019), total time (P=0.0129)


Conclusions :

The partial nephrectomy model shows face, content, and constructive validities. This study provides evidence for the usefulness of the model as a training tool for the laparoscopic partial nephrectomy.
