Jorge Gutíerrez, M.D., professor of urology, heads the endourology and stone disease program at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. He is editor of the Spanish edition of the AUA News and has served as assistant editor of the Journal of Endourology. He is a member and honorary member of various urological associations, including the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons. He has served in a variety of leadership roles, including as the current Secretary General of the Confederacion Americana de Urologia, as president of the Mexican Society of Urology and on the Board of Directors of the Endourological Society.
Gutíerrez co-directs the fellowship program on Endourology and Laparoscopy/Robotic Surgery at Wake Forest Baptist. He has been a leader in education, chairing and organizing national and international urologic meetings and serving as scientific co-chair and course director. His research interests include minimally invasive treatment alternatives for urinary stones; the effect of shock waves on tissue and tissue protection; prevention and management of urinary tract infections and sepsis in endoscopic surgery; surgical treatment alternatives for BPH; the development of endoscopic instrumentation for percutaneous renal surgery and ureteroscopy; and robotic surgery for the kidney. He has received numerous awards, including a Presidential Citation from the American Urological Association. He is active as an international lecturer and invited surgeon.
