Advanced Imaging Techniques for Urologic Malignancy

Saturday, September 22
5:15 PM - 6:15 PM
Location: Room 241

Diagnostic imaging has long been embraced by urologists to help in clinical decision-making and for pre-surgical planning. Recent advances in advanced imaging technologies hold great promise in improving patient-centered care. These imaging technologies span the areas of optical, molecular and cross-sectional imaging. These technologies capitalize on unique differences between normal and diseased tissues, allowing for improved tissue discrimination, enhancing diagnostic quality and yield, in hopes of improving therapeutic interventions. As urologists, we must continue to embrace these advancements in imaging to further our field and ultimately improve care for our patients.

Learning Objectives:

Li-Ming Su

David A. Cofrin Professor of Urologic Oncology; Chairman, Department of Urology
University of Florida College of Medicine, Department of Urology

Dr. Su is the David A. Cofrin Professor of Urologic Oncology and Chairman of the Department of Urology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed his urology residency at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weil Cornell Medical College in 2000 and a fellowship in robotics and laparoscopic surgery in 2001 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. He served eight years on faculty at the James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute at Johns Hopkins before coming to the University of Florida in 2008 as the Chief of the Division of Robotic and Minimally Invasive Urologic Surgery. His clinical interests are in minimally invasive surgical therapies including robotic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer. Dr. Su’s research focuses on exploring image-guided surgery for prostate and kidney cancer as well as optical imaging for renal tumors, robotic simulation and virtual reality. He has authored over 90 peer reviewed manuscripts and multiple book chapters including chapters in both Campbell’s Urology and Smith’s Textbook of Endourology. He is the editor of two editions of the textbook Atlas of Robotic Urologic Surgery, a surgical atlas that provides step-by-step schematic and video-based instructions and is designed to enhance the learning of novice robotic urologic surgeons. Dr. Su has been a member of the American Board of Urology Written Examination Committee and has received national awards including Newsweek’s Top Cancer Doctors (2015) and Castle Connelly’s America’s Top Doctors (2011-2018). Lastly, he has received first place audio-visual and manuscript awards for topics of laparoscopic prostate and kidney surgery.

Joseph C. Liao

Associate Professor of Urology
Department of Urology, Stanford University; Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System, Palo Alto, CA

Joseph Liao is currently Associate Professor of Urology at Stanford University and Chief of Urology at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. He earned his A.B. in Biology from Harvard College in 1993 and M.D. from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1997. After completing his urology residency and fellowship in endourology/minimally invasive surgery at UCLA, he joined the department of urology at Stanford in 2006, where he is also a member of Stanford Cancer Institute and Bio-X interdisciplinary research program. Dr. Liao is a surgeon-scientist who maintains an active clinical practice focusing on minimally invasive surgery and urologic oncology. His laboratory focuses on optical imaging, molecular imaging agents, image-guided surgery, and molecular diagnostics. Dr. Liao has pioneered the application of confocal endomicroscopy in the urinary tract and endoscopic molecular imaging of bladder cancer. He has served as the principal investigator on several grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation, and Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as a standing member of the NIH Instrument Systems Development (ISD) study section. He is an author of over 90 manuscripts and the editor of the new textbook Advances in Image-Guided Urologic Surgery (Springer 2015).
