Robotic Prostatectomy

Robot assisted radical prostatectomy has become the gold standard for the surgical management of prostate cancer at many institutions worldwide. In this course, our expert faculty will share tips and tricks for success, and recent techniques they have developed, to achieve efficiency and successful outcomes. Various aspects of the procedure will be covered in detail, using a video based format. Throughout the technical demonstrations, the goals of the course will be to share with participants the best techniques available to achieve excellent oncologic and functional outcomes. Both novice and experience surgeons will find value in attending this course.

Thomas E. Ahlering

Professor and Vice Chairman

Dr. Ahlering is a highly regarded surgeon in Urologic cancers. His years of experience in treatment of prostate, bladder, kidney and testicular cancers has placed him as one of the original America's Best Doctors since his membership in 1994. Formerly the Chief of the Division of Urology (1992-2002) after his arrival at UC Irvine from the City of Hope in 1992, Dr. Ahlering became Chief of the Division of Urologic Oncology when the new Department of Urology was established in 2002. He received his medical degree at St. Louis University School of Medicine, followed by a residency in urology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and a two-year fellowship in urologic oncology under the clinical training of Dr. Donald G. Skinner and laboratory training under Peter Jones, Ph.D. He has received local, national, and international recognition for his expertise in urologic oncology, particularly in the development of minimally invasive radical prostatectomy assisted by the da Vinci robot. He has performed more than 2000 such robotic surgeries, including the first robotic prostatectomy surgeries in Southern California, Denmark, Australia, and Canada.

Raju Thomas

Dr. Thomas was named Chair of the Department of Urology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, effective March 1, 1996. He is also a Professor of Urology and the Residency Program Director for the Department of Urology. Dr. Thomas obtained his medical degree from the University of Bombay, India in 1975 and subsequently graduated in 1982 from the Urology residency program at Tulane University. He completed a fellowship program at the Tulane Primate Center co-sponsored by the American Urological Association and the National Kidney Foundation. Dr. Thomas' primary interests are in minimally invasive urologic surgery, including: laparoscopy, robotic surgery, and endourologic procedures. He has pioneered several innovative endoscopic and surgical procedures, and developed the principles for their use. He has promoted radical perineal prostatectomy in conjunction with laparoscopy as a minimally morbid alternative for management of prostate cancer.

His career has been dedicated to finding minimally invasive therapy alternatives to urologic surgery. He has the distinction of introducing urologic laparoscopy in 1991 and was the first surgeon to perform robotic surgery in the entire Gulf South in 2002. His experience has earned him a place in advanced continuing medical education programs around the U.S. and the world. Dr. Thomas has authored over 180 scientific articles and book chapters. He is a member of several national and international scientific societies and is a peer reviewer for several urologic journals. Dr. Thomas’ career highlights include Presidency of the SES-AUA and the 31st World Congress of Endourology, and being recipient of the AUA Distinguished Service Award in 2016. Above all though, his rescuing and rebuilding the Department of Urology at Tulane University following Hurricane Katrina in 2005 counts as his greatest personal achievement.

Arieh Shalhav

Arieh L. Shalhav, M.D. received his M.D. degree from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed an internship and urology residency at the Sheba Medical Center, Sackler School of Medicine Tel Aviv University. During his residency he received a one year scholarship and trained at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. After completing his residency, he began a fellowship in laparoscopy/endourology at Washington University in St. Louis and remained for one year as Assistant Professor of Urology. In July 1999 he accepted a position as Director of Laparoscopic Urologic Surgery and Assistant Professor of Urology at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, where he developed one of the most active laparoscopic urology programs in the country. In 2002, Dr. Shalhav joined the faculty at the University of Chicago Medical Center as the Director of Laparoscopic and Robotic Urologic Surgery, where he established an Endourologic Society fellowship that in 2011 became a Society of Urologic Oncology fellowship training 3 fellows a year. Dr. Shalhav is a pioneer in the field and has built a prominent clinical and research robotic surgery program in the country. He authored multiple manuscripts, has been faculty on multiple conferences and ran 5 major CME courses. In 2005 he became director of the University of Chicago multi specialty robotic program, today one of the largest in the country. In 2007 Dr. Shalhav was named The Fritz and Mary Lee Duda Family Professor and Chief of Urology at The University of Chicago. In 2010, Dr. Shalhav was the President of the 28th WCE Meeting in Chicago. He has received awards for his teaching, research, and clinical work from multiple societies. He is an active member in these societies and has vast experience in robotic and laparoscopic management of urologic disease.
