Focal Therapy for Urological Malignancy

This course will hit the highlights of the exciting and emerging field of image-guided focal therapy for kidney and prostate cancer. Today, many patients simply wish to be cured of cancer in an outpatient minimally invasive manner and are seeking care from physicians who offer the expertise to help them. Patients want to avoid the side effects and morbidity of the knife and are pursuing ablative therapies using cold/heat, photodynamic therapy, needles and therapeutic ultrasound. These therapies preserve quality of life, are essentially painless and are repeatable if necessary. This course will provide the basics such as patient selection, available devices, outcomes etc to get the interested physician started as a focal therapist.

Thomas Polascik

Thomas J. Polascik, M.D. is Professor in the Duke Cancer Institute, the Department of Surgery at the Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC. Dr. Polascik trained at the Brady Urological Institute, the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland. After finishing his residency under the tutelage of Patrick C. Walsh M.D. he did an oncology fellowship under the mentorship of Alan W. Partin M.D. PhD. He then joined the faculty at Duke University and has been there since 1998. His clinical practice and research interests incorporate both prostate and kidney cancer. 

In 2006 he developed an interest in the nascent field of focal therapy for prostate cancer. He is the founder and director, the International Symposium on Focal Therapy and Imaging of Prostate and Kidney Cancer that began at Duke in 2008.  The symposium has brought together investigators and clinicians from all regions of the world and the meeting alternates between North America and Europe with Co-chairs Drs Jean de la Rosette and Indy Gill. This past year marked the tenth annual meeting held in the Netherlands in February 2018.

Dr. Polascik is the Editor of Imaging and Focal Therapy of Early Prostate Cancer. He is the director of the Society of Urologic Oncology program at Duke and also the Genitourinary Program on Focal Therapy at the Duke Cancer Institute.  His research interests include the development of image-guided therapies for early prostate cancer, the development of prostate cancer imaging techniques and minimally invasive treatment options for both prostate and kidney cancer. He has published over 300 manuscripts and book chapters. He has held positions on several boards of directors, advisory boards, and has been active in the North Carolina Urological Association and the Board of Directors with the Southeastern Section of the American Urological Association.

James Borin

James F. Borin, MD is Assistant Professor of Urology and Director of Endourology at the NYU School of Medicine. He attended Yale University and Yale Medical School, followed by a Urology residency at the Mount Sinai Medical Center. He then completed a two-year fellowship in endourology and robotic surgery at the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Borin was previously Director of Robotic Surgery and Director of the Executive Health Program at the University of Maryland.
Dr. Borin has helped pioneer surgical techniques for kidney stones and has written over 30 papers and book chapters on minimally-invasive urologic surgery. He has taught numerous national and international courses on advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques and he chairs the Image-Guided Therapy Workgroup of the Endourological Society.
