MP33-10 - School of laparoscopy. On line Education Platform and International Connective Knowledge Cooperative Network for the improvement of training in laparoscopy and robotics

Sun, Sep 23
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Introduction & Objective :

Urological surgery is living exponential times with rapidly changing technological cycles.

Learning has acquired an essential role since learning cycles in surgery are slower and the learning curves of new technologies have a direct impact on patient`s safety.

The field of surgical education today is living challenging times because technology is unevenly distributed and for many urologists real educational needs do not match with the state of the art educational offer.

In parallel, we are living a revolution in the development of technologies of the information and communication (TIC). Revolution is not only in the new TICs but also in the way people are using them for communicating and interact.

The traditional learning model within the Urology Department is overwhelmed and there is need  for new training and learning methods.

The aim of this work is to present our initial experience with on line education on urologic laparoscopic and robotic surgery using the 2.0 Web tools and the start of an international cooperation collaborative project to improve the acces of LATAM urologists to training in laparoscoy and robotics.

Methods :

The school of laparoscopy project has developed an international network of experts in laparoscopic surgery and robotics and urologists interested in training or improvement of their laparoscopic knowledge.

Since 2014 we have completed 10 online courses on laparoscopic and robotic urological operations: Nephrectomy, Partial nephrectomy, UUT reconstructive surgery, and radical cystectomy. On line courses are built in a LMS web (learning management system) and combine various new technologies of the mobile web in order to adapt the educational experience to the new ways of use of TICs. This tools include Social Media and App.

A scholarship program for LATAM urologists was started in 2015.

Content building is provided by a National and International collaborative network including 19 urologists from Spain, UK, USA, France and Puerto Rico.

Results :

A total of 420 urologists Spain and LATAM have completed the courses. 60 scholarships have been granted to 50 LATAM urologists from 12 different countries.

Direct feedback and satisfaction surveys showed that on line surgical education may be very useful for real life daily practice.

Table 1: Satisfaction survey for the 2017 Nephrectomy course.

Conclusions :

The combination of new TICs provides high quality surgical on line education for those urologists who have difficult access due to geographical reasons. Surgical on line education may have a very positive impact in the daily practice of urologists in their local environment.
