MP19-4 - The value of free internet-based video tutorials for young urologists: A European multicentric evaluation of flexible ureteroscopy for proximal ureteric stone tutorials

Sat, Sep 22
2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Introduction & Objective :

Internet based video tutorials for endourological procedures are getting popular for learning and training, especially for young trainee urologists. The goal of our study was to evaluate the role, content, educational value, satisfaction and feedback on free access tutorials of flexible ureteroscopy (FURS) for proximal ureteric stone treatment.

Methods :

From hospitals located in 6 different European countries (Romania, Poland, France, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom) a total of 57 young urologists (less than 40 years old), either residents or specialists, were enrolled in this study. Three most commonly viewed YouTube video tutorials of FURS for proximal ureteric stones were selected for evaluation and feedback (Fig.1). The first tutorial belonged to the MAESTRO portal, the second to the Service d'Urologie CHU Henri Mondor - Université Paris-Est Créteil and the third to the UrologyBook portal.

All participants were requested to watch the videos and to fill a 17-question evaluation of each video (Fig.2). 1 to 5 five points were given for each question and tutorials were ranked based on the overall score. A separate question related analysis was also performed.

Results :

Based on the total score, the first ranked video was MAESTRO, the second CHU Mondor and the third UrologyBook (Fig.3).

UrologyBook scored less points at all the questions, compared to the other two portals. MAESTRO received better scores at all individual questions. Description of the proper usage and settings of instruments was rated almost equal for MAESTRO and CHU Mondor. The educational value scored the most points and the tips&tricks received the least points (Fig.4).

Conclusions :

The doctors in training appreciate free access portals like MAESTRO, with a well design educative content. In the age of digital media, the uptake of video-based learning is likely to increase in future.
