Introduction & Objective : The MEMOKATH 051 stent is an ureteral device designed as a permanent solution in cases of ureteral stenosis, both benign and malignant. It can be inserted anterograde or retrograde and is available in a variety of lengths, with a caliber of 10.5 charrier that at its end expands to 21 charrier.

Our objective was to carry out a retrospective review of the cases of ureteral stenosis treated in our Service through the placement of a Memokath 051 ureteral stent.

Methods : From July 2012 to January 2017, 31 Memokath 051 stents were placed in 23 patients (11 men and 12 women), with an average age of 62.9 years (33-79). The origin of the stenosis was: tumor (29.03%), iatrogenic (19.35%), kidney transplant (19.35%) and retroperitoneal fibrosis (32.25%). The most frequent location of the stenosis was in the distal ureter (35.48%). The length of the stenosis varied between 1 and 10 cm, with an average of 2.38 cm and stent of different lengths were placed, with 6 cm being the most frequently used (38.70%).

Results : The average follow-up was of 15.95 months, with a success rate of 70.96%, understanding as such the permeability of the ureter (in some cases despite the removal of the stent) maintaining adequate renal function and in the absence of lower back pain. Among the most frequent complications observed are: migration of the stent from the site of placement (35.48%); urinary tract infections (32.25%) and obstruction of the stent (25.80%).

Conclusions : The MEMOKATH 051 ureteral stent is a safe, minimally invasive and effective way to treat ureteral stenosis in selected patients in the long term, providing them with a good quality of life.
