Business Process Improvement
1. Advanced Warehouse Management 101- Concepts
Class Summary: If you look at most businesses, one of the easiest ways to drive improvement is to implement a WMS system. This course is to familiarize yourself with the theory, reasons, and capabilities of WMS systems.
Class Detailed Description: One of the industry’s biggest ongoing challenges, is to improve inventory accuracy. This process has gone through many iterations. One of the biggest things that was realized was that getting the electronic transaction to occur at the same time as the physical inventory transaction was important to dramatically improve accuracy. This process also allowed for validation that we were getting the right product for the right instance from or to the right location. This vastly improved inventory accuracy and visibility but it still fell short for one very important reason. The computer itself only cared about those transactions that it needed. There was a whole host of operations, sub optimizations, and inventory processes that were totally out of the scope of the ERP system. This created a huge hole in the inventory visibility and the introduction of errors that can occur within the physical process. This was solved by the introduction of what is commonly called Warehouse Management Systems. What the warehouse management systems allowed us to do was to configure the physical transactions to associated computer transactions. This means that the warehouse management system itself understands where the inventory is at all facets of the process. The single fact alone allowed us to also measure the efficiency of the associated transactions. This drives the ability to optimize standardize and compare processes and resources. It also then has the byproduct of allowing us to validate through every step of the inventory movement if required. The biggest thing this gives us is a structured basis that allows us to support the multithreaded processes that occur within every warehouse.
