As part of the publication of the second edition of Structural Design for Physical Protection, the ASCE has included a new chapter on the protection of bridges from blast loading. This chapter is aimed at both practicing security professionals or blast engineers, whose principal focus is on buildings, as well as practicing bridge engineers with minimal knowledge of physical protection concepts. While the practice of hardening bridges is still relatively uncommon, the importance of some bridges to a region’s economy justifies additional protection. While the subject of more recent academic study, there exists minimal consensus of the best strategies for protecting bridges from blast and other effects. This presentation will talk about how different risk strategies can be taken for bridges, and how this may influence the design. The book chapter also includes suggestions for communicating design and risk strategies within a design-build arrangement. This includes a template and typical suggestions for performance requirements of bridges when subjected to various security threats.

This chapter and presentation complements the other publications and tools which provide more technical data, but are less focused on the decision making process. Combining all of this data can help form the basis of a standard of practice to assist design professionals in blast engineering of bridges.

Rob Smith is a structural engineer based in San Francisco, specializing in leading highly technical projects. He has a broad background in many fields, bringing together technologies from different industries such as offshore, bridges, buildings and wind energy. He has particular expertise in seismic, blast and non-linear analysis and has worked on projects as diverse as small office alterations, to Olympic stadiums, long span bridges, and the largest observation wheel in the world. Mr. Smith is part of the Advanced Technology and Research team in Arup San Francisco, but works on projects all over the world.
