Blast loading due to vapor cloud explosions is a common case of loading in the design of petrochemical structures. This study highlights the effect of the three dimensional analysis for buildings subject to blast load using Applied Element Method (AEM). ASCE code allows for design of petrochemical facilities to resist blast loading using simplified component by component analyses. This presentation shows that using advanced AEM three-dimensional structural analysis can lead to reduction in the straining actions and deflections resulting from the analysis. The efficiency of the numerical technique as well as the advance in computing capabilities in recent years allows completing this analysis in a time frame suitable for use in practical engineering applications. An applied element model was developed for a building designed based upon the American Society of Civil Engineers code for design of blast resistant buildings in petrochemical facilities. This case study is used to demonstrate the possible optimization in the design. Additional analysis is performed to compare the effect of subjecting the structure to a dynamic impulse that impacts the whole structure at the same time instant versus a realistic case where the impulse sequentially reaches different components depending on their distance from the center of explosion.
