511968 - Sharing Claim and near miss experiences

Friday, April 26
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM
Location: Bayhill 25-26

This session is a “Full Disclosure” sharing of an actual claim by the defending engineer and the defense
attorney. This type of claim repeats over and over. Practicing structural engineers need to learn how to
avoid the situation and how to defend the claim if it occurs. The project was an urban, mid-rise project
with elevated slabs. The project presented the classic “contest” between developers who seek to use the
most “efficient” approach possible versus the contractors who are unprepared to implement a Codecompliant,
but aggressive design. Competing and evolving design software make it even more
challenging. Even with all of that, the engineer here was vindicated, but only after nearly a decade of
legal contests. This is a must session for those designing elevated concrete slabs or commercial projects
in general.
