458006 - Unleashing the Profession: How Performance Based Design Will Shape Our Future

Friday, April 26
1:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Location: Celebration 5-6

Panel Session with audience engagement via live polling and Q&A

Description: Performance-Based Design (PBD) is NOT a futuristic buzzword, but a powerful approach that will shape the future of the structural engineering profession. PBD turns the traditional design paradigm upside down as required performance is the starting point for the design. As part of the SEI Vision for the Future, the SEI Board of Governors has been leading the path forward. PBD principles
must be developed into functional standards that all stakeholders can understand, endorse, and execute to their mutual benefit and the benefit of society. Many of our profession's luminaries are the champions driving this bold change. During this interactive session, the panelists will explain why PBD is worth pursuing and discuss the hazard-specific efforts they are leading to enable performance-based design, review, acceptance, and construction of buildings using materials, structural systems, and
devices that may or may not be covered by the prescriptive provisions of today's building codes. Come ready to learn what the future will hold and bring your questions for this esteemed panel!

Learning Objectives:
• Understand the limitations of specification-based prescriptive approach to structural engineering design and practice.
• Discover SEI's efforts to advance the performance-based design paradigm.
• Become familiar with collaborations and partnerships needed to drive change across structural engineering design and practice.

Sponsoring Organizations:
• SEI Board of Governors Task Committee on Performance-Based Design
• The Charles Pankow Foundation

Panelists:
• Don Dusenberry, Chair,SEI Board of Governors Task Committee on Performance-Based Design
• Ron Hamburger,Chair,ASCE 7-22 Main Committee and Chair,Member,SEI Board of Governors
• Kevin LaMalva, Chair,SEI Fire Protection Committee
• Donald Scott, Chair; ASCE 7-22 Wind Loads Subcommittee and Principal Investigator of the ASCE/SEI Pre-standard for Performance Based Design for Wind, a project funded with a Research Grant from the Charles Pankow Foundation

This represents over 190-million square feet of space and over $39-billion in construction cost. He was recognized with the 2016 Fazlur Khan Lifetime Achievement Medal awarded by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) for his engineering excellence of tall buildings and his leadership of the multi-discipline Council. In 2008, he was named Structural Engineer of the Year by Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings Journal. His leadership in the collaborative design of tall buildings was recognized with the rare election of an engineer to Honorary Membership by the American Institute of Architects. He is also a Charles Pankow Foundation Board Member
