Full Session with Abstracts
4) The final presentation by Dan Bass of FEMA, Glenn Overcash of AECOM and/or Mike O’Rourke of Rensselaer will cover 3-D snow drifts. The current ASCE 7 approach for snow drifts envisions 2-D drifts resulting from wind along a single compass direction. A FEMA project documenting structural collapse of school buildings in the greater Boston area in February 2015 identified 3-D drifts for certain roof geometries. In these cases drifts from one snow source area and one wind direction combined with drifts from another source area and wind direction. The presentation will suggest rules for such combined /3-D drifts. Please note that Dan and Glenn lead the Boston project and that Mike O’Rourke has been the chair of the ASCE Snow and Rain subcommittee for the 7-98 thru 7-16 cycles.
