342793-3 - Advances in Testing and Measuring Capabilities of Large-scale Composite Beams under Combined Structural and Fire Loads

As industry moves towards performance-based design, large-scale tests are required to help understand the complex behavior of buildings subjected to structurally-significant real fires. The recently commissioned structural-fire testing facility at the National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL) can uniquely test full-scale structures subjected simultaneously to real fires and controlled mechanical load. However, having the capability to test specimens of such scale will be of limited benefit if not accompanied by state-of-the-art measurement capabilities. Over the years, developing the metrological aspect of testing has been a main focus at the NFRL. This presentation will introduce the audience to the NFRL facility, with emphasis on how its unique capabilities facilitated a recent experimental study of a series of 42-ft. long composite beams under combined gravity and fire loading. The presentation will begin with an overview of laboratory’s testing and metrological capabilities. It will discuss the structural and fire loading techniques used, as well as the instrumentation and measurement techniques. Instrumentation at thousands of measurement points included newly developed sensors (such as fiber optics) in addition to traditional sensors (such as thermocouples and strain gauges). Non-contact measurement techniques including Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and laser tracking in fire are discussed. The goal of this work is to provide the data needed for the development of tools, guides, and standards, that will enable engineers to design for safe structures under realistic fire loading scenarios.

Research Structural Engineer
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)

Dr. Seif is a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.), working as a Research Structural Engineer in the National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), studying structural behavior under realistic fire loading. He received a MSc followed by a PhD in Structural Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University, with a dissertation focused on the cross-sectional stability of high-strength structural steel. He also chairs the Structural Stability Research Counsel’s (SSRC) Task Group on “Stability under extreme loads”, and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers/ Structural Engineering Institute’s (ASCE/SEI) “Fire Protection Committee”.
