340050-6 - Novel Connections for Concrete Filled Tubes Bridges to Promote Cost-Effective Accelerated Bridge Construction

Concrete-filled tubes (CFTs) can be used as vertical elements in bridge construction including columns and piers for the superstructure and piles and shafts for the substructure. CFTs offer both engineering and construction benefits; in terms of engineering properties they have high stiffness and strength relative to comparably sized reinforced concrete components and, to achieve ABC, they eliminate formwork, internal reinforcing cage, and concrete vibration (through the use of self-consolidating concrete). A prior drawback to using CFTs was the lack of constructible and structurally resilient connections to meet non-seismic or seismic demands. This project has developed two innovative connections using advanced experimental and high-resolution finite element analysis to investigate their performance and develop design expressions. The first connection embeds the tube in the adjacent component; an end ring is welded to the base of the tube to transfer the column or pile forces to the adjacent components. The second is a debonded, welded dowel connection in which dowels are welded to the tube with demand-critical bevel welds and debonded to ensure adequate drift capacity without damage or strength degradation. The presentation will focus on the research into the connections, described the structural performance, response and design; design examples and standard drawings are available for distribution to interested parties.

Dawn Lehman is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Washington. Her research expertise lies in seismic engineering of structural systems (http://www.ce.washington.edu/people/faculty/faculty.php?id=24).
She has conducted research on a range of systems including reinforced concrete walls and frames, steel braced frames, and concrete-filled-tube, precast and reinforced-concrete bridge systems. Her research results have been implemented in codes, design manuals and provisional structural engineering recommendations, including AASHTO, AISC, WSDOT BDM, Caltrans SDM, and ASCE 41.
