Single Abstract

343381 - Transient wind loading characteristics for tornado-based design

Design wind loads in codes and standards assume wind properties that are time invariant, similar to those generated in wind tunnels. Tornadoes have transient flow characteristics (such as rapid changes in wind speed, direction, and vertical wind speeds) that create wind properties considerably different than those assumed by codes and standards. Computational and physical simulations of tornados have suggested that the transient flow characteristics of tornadoes contribute significantly to roof failure. In other words, tornado flow generates greater suction and uplift and thus lower pressure coefficients on the roof than straight-line wind does. As ASCE aims to include tornado design specifications in ASCE 7-22, it is imperative to create a new design philosophy including the transient characteristics of tornado winds. A computer model was developed to estimate the effect of these transient characteristics on wind loading, which uses the quasi-steady theory as the framework with full-scale data from the Wind Engineering Research Field Laboratory (WERFL) at Texas Tech University and wind tunnel data from the Boundary Layer Wind Tunnel (BLWT) at the University of Florida. The results will help predict wind loading during tornadoes and set a basis for tornado pressure coefficients.

The goal of this presentation is to provide insight into the parameters that must be taken into account when designing against tornadoes. The targeted audience are researchers and design professionals interested in tornado-based design and extreme wind loading.
