Natural Disasters - Moving Toward Improved Resilience

Single Abstract

343373 - Lessons learned from recent tornado damage surveys

Tornadoes cause significant damage and casualties throughout North America and across the globe. Recent high-visibility storms in the United States have spurred the structural engineering community to consider the feasibility and form of tornado-based design in codes, standards, and practice. Despite advances in remote sensing methods and technology, accurate characterization of near-surface tornado winds remains elusive. Ground surveys continue to be the most reliable and valuable method of tornado research: revealing structural failure modes, wind speed indicators, and community response characteristics.

The Wind Engineering Research Laboratory at the University of Illinois conducts rapid-response damage surveys, data-driven tornado characterization, and post-storm impact analysis. These activities are combined with wind loading models and structural analysis to support a greater understanding of both structural response and community-level resilience.

This presentation will provide an overview of field observations and results of post-storm analysis. The goal of this presentation is to provide insight into specific risk factors for structures in tornadoes, improved methods of tornado characterization, and the role of structural design in community resilience. The targeted audience of researchers, design professions, and community leaders will be offered clear, concise recommendations that are regionally and globally relevant.
