342750 - Identifying and Applying Pertinent Technical Resources in Unique Investigative Engineering Projects; Case Study Based Discussion

Saturday, April 21

Among the many trials of the investigative engineer conducting a post-incident inspection, one of the earliest and often most important challenges is to identify and properly implement appropriate technical resources pertaining to the materials and unique circumstances of the subject incident. Through discussion of several real-world case studies, this presentation will exhibit various strategies for obtaining technical information and combining it with scientific reasoning and analysis to formulate a professional opinion for unique and/or complicated incidents. Strategies shared will include elemental breakdown of systems for application of basic engineering principles and the scientific method, engagement with manufacturers to acquire specific proprietary material data, research and analysis of unique design standards for non-traditional structures and/or materials, and delegation or partnering with other engineering professionals with more pertinent topical experience or expertise or who may view the incident from a different perspective.
