Integral abutment bridges (IABs) are becoming increasingly popular in the United States, and in particular, Illinois is using integral abutments designs in new bridges whenever possible. Illinois includes a wide range of seismic hazard, and the proximity of the southern region of the state to the New Madrid Seismic Zone leads to increased interest in understanding IAB seismic behavior. While seat-type abutment bridges can mobilize expansion bearings at abutments to contribute to dissipating seismic energy, the lack of these components in IABs places a greater emphasis on the interaction between the abutment piles and the surrounding soil. The present research incorporates the soil-structure interaction into an IAB model that also comprehensively represents the other critical components that influence seismic response in order to determine the overall behavior of an IAB and how different bridge components contribute to dissipating seismic energy. Other bridge component behaviors included in the model are the behavior of the pier columns, pier foundations, elastomeric bearings and bearing side retainers at the pier caps, and the connection between the abutment pile cap and the rest of the abutment. This study observes the effects foundation soil properties have on the overall behavior of a three-span steel IAB. Four soil conditions are analyzed, two of which are based on soil property data in southern Illinois and two represent realistic hard and soft boundaries that would be found in southern Illinois. The results demonstrate the effects that soil conditions have on not only the foundation piles, but also on the IAB as a whole. The different soil conditions produce effects which generally modify the sequence of limit state occurrences within the IAB and the overall strength of the IAB.
