The present paper examines the blast impact and fire response analysis of offshore platforms such as production platform, living quarters platform, and the connecting bridges. The objective of blast impact analysis is to determine the effect of blast loading on primary and secondary structural members of the subject platforms. There is a potential for structural failure associated with blast overpressures, and therefore, these events, if large, have the potential to impact the structural integrity. The purpose of structural fire response analysis is to assess the consequences of fire scenarios on the integrity and stability of the subject platforms by investigating the local and global failure mechanisms throughout the structure.

Yavuz Mentes

Dr. Mentes earned his Ph.D. degree in Civil Engineering with Structural Engineering focus from the Georgia Institute of Technology. His Ph.D. studies mainly focused on the analytical and experimental assessment of the gusset plate connections in steel truss bridges using linear and nonlinear finite element analysis. Dr. Mentes is familiar with specifications including ACI, AISC, NDS, IBC, and ASCE 7. His project experience includes the blast impact and fire integrity analysis of the offshore platform structures and onshore petrochemical facilities, design and analysis of structures under extreme conditions such as blast, fire and seismic loads, stress analysis and stability assessment of concrete dams, and the finite element analysis (FEA) of the pipelines subjected to geo-hazards including fault crossing and translational failures. Dr. Mentes also had experience in performing slope stability analysis to identify effectiveness of advanced materials and anchors using finite element analysis along with frequency analysis performed for compressor foundations. Dr. Mentes has received the blast response blind prediction award from NSF/ACI and is proficient in using various finite element analysis software packages including ABAQUS, FAHTS, USFOS, STAAD PRO, GTSTRUDL, SAP2000, and RISA 3D
