Panel: Secure Software Development Dual-Model Apprenticeships

Panelists will present perspectives in support of employer-led, dual-model apprenticeships to develop software secure from cyberattacks. Apprentices graduate with an associate's degree in secure software development at a community college while being mentored on the job to acquire competencies aligned with the NICE Cybersecurity Workforce Framework. This also makes graduates readily employable with a DoL Registered Apprenticeship credential and industry recognized certificates, such as the CSSLP.

Girish Seshagiri

Girish Seshagiri is Executive Vice President | Chief Technology Officer, Ishpi Information Technologies, Inc., a fast-growing provider of cybersecurity services to the Department of Defense and other civilian agencies of the federal government. Girish is an early adopter of the apprenticeship dual model for skills formation. He is a staunch advocate of creating workforce capable of developing software which is secure from cyber-attacks. Girish is currently providing the founding organizational leadership to the national roll out of the employer-driven Community Initiative Center of Excellence for Secure Software (CICESS) dual model apprenticeship, partnering with community colleges.
Girish has an MBA (Marketing) from Michigan State University.

Carol Woody, PhD

Technical Manager for Cyber Security Engineering
Software Engineering Institute

Dr. Carol C. Woody is the technical manager of the Cyber Security Engineering team in the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on building capabilities for cybersecurity in highly complex networked systems and systems of systems. She has coauthored a book Cyber Security Engineering: A Practical Approach for Systems and Software Assurance published November 2016 as part of the SEI Series in Software Engineering. Dr. Woody successfully implementing technology solutions for such diverse domains as banking, mining, manufacturing and finance. She holds a B.S. in mathematics from the College of William & Mary, an M.B.A. with distinction from Wake Forest University, and a Ph.D. in information systems from NOVA Southeastern University.

Bill Newhouse

Deputy Director
National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education

Bill Newhouse is the Deputy Director of the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE), and Senior Security Engineer at the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence (NCCoE). At NICE, he leads and promotes efforts to foster, energize, and promote a robust network and an integrated ecosystem of cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development that can more effectively secure cyberspace and is lead author of the NICE Framework, NIST Special Publication 800-181. Additionally, Mr. Newhouse promotes cybersecurity R&D efforts as a co-chair of a federal cybersecurity interagency working group and as a regular representative to other federal cybersecurity R&D working groups.
