In cyber, there seem to be two career choices: certification or education. Each provides unique benefits; however, cyber professionals should approach either options with the goal of developing skills that strategically align with cyber careers. By performing personal SWOT analyses and building business cases proving self-worth, such alignment is possible--but only if we A.C.C.E.P.T. the challenge! Your career is not just about what you can do or what you know, but also about who you are!


Lead Information System Security Officer
Department of Justice (DOJ) / Office of Justice Programs (OJP)

Retired Army veteran, Dr. Stephanie Carter, started her cybersecurity career in 1994 serving several roles such as network engineer, security analyst, and information management officer. Currently she leads a team of 6 Information System Security Officers for DOJ/OJP. She has facilitated response teams between DoD and agencies such as DISA, NSA, FBI, and FEMA and has led large IT projects and/or partnered with US Army, DHS, US-CERT, DOJ, DEA, Joint Staff, and DHA on cyber initiatives serving as SME for all cloud, NIST RMF, FedRAMP, ISO 17020, and NIST 800-171 related activities. To close the diversity gap in cybersecurity, Dr. Carter mentors cybersecurity professionals as well as serves as a professor teaching Cybersecurity Graduate programs with University of Maryland University College.
