Derek A. Smith is currently an IT Program Manager at the IRS and the Founder of the National Cybersecurity Education Center. He is a professor at The University of Maryland and Virginia University of Science and Technolgy and teaches cybersecurity certifications courses at the University of Masyland, Baltimore County. Derek is the author of "Cybersense - The Leader's Guide to Protecting Critical Information," "Conversational User Behavior Analytics," and "Conversational Digital Forensics Analysis." He has been a technical advisor for the books, "Privileged Attack Vectors: Building Effective Cyber-Defense Strategies to Protect Organizations" and "Asset Attack Vectors: Building Effective Vulnerability Management Strategies to Protect Organizations," and wrote a chapter for "Cybersecurity in Our Digital Lives (Protecting Our Future)." Formerly, he has worked for a number of IT companies including Computer Sciences Corporation and Booz Allen Hamilton. Derek spent 18 years as a special agent for various government agencies and the military. He has also taught business and IT courses at several universities for over 25 years. Derek has served in the US Navy, Air Force and retired from the Army National Guard. He completed an MBA, MS in IT Information Assurance, Masters in IT Project Management, and an MS in Digital Forensics and is currently pursuing a Doctorate degree in Organizational Leadership.
